The Steed Drape Cut

Bespoke Tailors For Savile Row Gentlemen

Steed’s History

The Drape Cut is more than a style; it’s been our signature house philosophy since the firm was founded in 1995. A direct and softer response to the rigid, military-influenced tailoring that Savile Row and British tailoring are often known for. This fluid approach breaks from convention, offering a suit that prioritises comfort and freedom of movement above all. Our heritage is rooted in the tradition of creating a more athletic, masculine silhouette without the stiffness that can restrict and confine the wearer.

The essence of the Drape Cut lies in its sophisticated engineering. We create a subtle fullness of cloth in the chest, allowing the fabric to fall effortlessly from a soft, slightly wider shoulder. This elegant “drape” is the hallmark of the cut, distinguishing it with a relaxed fluidity. Coupled with a small, high armhole, this feature not only provides a greater range of motion but also ensures the jacket retains its clean, sculpted line, even as you move.

The result is a jacket that feels like a second skin. It provides a striking silhouette, with broad shoulders, small high armhole and a clean waistline, while remaining genuinely comfortable to wear for an entire day. It embodies a timeless sophistication that is effortlessly elegant. This is a garment for the man who understands that true style is a blend of form and function.

The Steed Drape Cut is a testament to our commitment to both. It stands as a living example of how the finest traditions of tailoring can be adapted to meet the needs of the modern man, ensuring he can walk down a street or into a boardroom with equal parts confidence and ease. It is a cut designed not just to be seen, but to be worn and enjoyed.

About Savile Row Tailoring

Savile Row is globally renowned for it’s bespoke tailoring and has been dubbed “The Golden Mile of Tailoring”. The word ‘bespoke’ is even said to have originated there when cloth for a suit was said to “be spoken for” by an individual client.

Savile Row is known for creating bespoke garments since the 1800’s for the elite – they have been credited with creating bespoke garments for historical figures such as Winston Churchill and Lord Nelson as well as more recent well-known figures such as the Prince of Wales and Muhammad Ali.

True Savile Row bespoke tailors create their bespoke garments only through collaboration; a fusion of the traditional skills of the master bespoke tailor and the selections and tastes of the client.

The creation of a bespoke commission is a personal experience for both the bespoke tailor and the client. Most of all, it is the relationship between the two that determines the success of the outcome.

Edwin Deboise, Steed Founder
& Master Cutter

The story started with Edwin, a third generation Savile Row Cutter, growing up in the tailoring environment, often helping out with his father in his workshop when he was just 10 years of age.

As a young man he trained at The London College of Fashion and then worked under the legendary cutter Edward Sexton (at Sexton and Tommy Nutter‘s famous “Nutters of Savile Row”), followed by seven years at Anderson & Sheppard before founding Steed.

Edwin is closing on fifty years of experience, over thirty on The Row, looking after fashion icons such as Franco MoschinoNicola Bulgari and Manolo Blahnik.
